About

Joel Viera (born 1998) is a bassist, composer, and educator of Puerto Rican descent raised in New York City. He began playing upright bass at the age of 13 and has since developed a deep passion for jazz and the rich tradition of improvised music.

After graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, Joel earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies from The City College of New York under the tutelage of Steve Wilson, Ray Gallon, Mike Holober, and Suzanne Pittson.

Over the years, Joel has studied with and been mentored by acclaimed bassists including Luques Curtis, Rob Duguay, Vasilis Koutsonanos, and Neal Miner.

His musical experiences range from performing traditional jazz and modern original compositions to collaborating with vocalists and large ensembles. He has performed extensively at venues across the city, including The Jazz Standard, Dizzy's Club, David Geffen Hall, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as numerous bars, cafes, jam sessions, and private events throughout NYC.

Alongside his performing career, Joel joined the staff at Dizzy's Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he stayed closely connected to the New York jazz scene while hearing many of the music's great artists perform weekly.

As both a performer and bandleader, Joel strives to create music that is honest, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, and infused with a modern sensibility, while also exploring the spiritual dimensions of life.
